YOUNG DRAMATISTS' PROJECT '10
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES


1) PLAYWRIGHT ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS


     a) The playwright must be a resident of Hillsborough, Pinellas, or Pasco County and enrolled as a middle or high school student.

     b) Winning playwrights must be available to attend and fully participate in the following mandatory activities (all at the Gorilla Theatre, 4419 N Hubert Ave, Tampa, FL 33614).

               i) YDP Playwrights' Writing Workshop — three sessions: 4:30 p.m. on March 15, 17 & 20, 2010.

               ii) Photo Shoot — 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 20, 2010.

               iii) Initial Read-Through with the producer, cast, directors, and designers: 6:30 p.m. on Monday, April 19, 2010.

               iv) Opening Night and award presentation: 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 3, 2010.

               v) Dramaturge Meetings & Rewrites: March 15-June 2 (ongoing, scheduled on an individual basis).

               vi) Video Interview (to be shown as an intro to each play). To be conducted in May at the convenience of the playwright and the producers.

     c) Winning playwrights must attend a three-session YDP Playwrights' Writing Workshop conducted by James Rayfield, YDP Artistic Director and Dramaturge (see dates, above). These sessions will be spent discussing and polishing the scripts; making revisions as necessary for length, dramatic structure, dialogue, and character development.

     d) Winning playwrights should expect multiple, and possibly extensive, re-writes in a short period under the supervision of the Dramaturge. Winning playwrights must make themselves available to provide such rewrites as needed in the initial stages of the project.

     e) Winning playwrights must also be willing to participate in at least some of the "recommended" and "encouraged" activities listed in the YDP calendar (see page 2, below) to include attendance at a minimum of two rehearsals.

IMPORTANT: Submission of a play for YDP '10 signifies acceptance of the playwright eligibility requirements outlined on this page. Please DO NOT send us your script if you do not agree or if you cannot commit to the dates specified.

*** April 19, 2010 Initial read-through 6:30 p.m.
* April 20, 2010 Rehearsals begin (schedule TBD)
*** March 15-June 2 Dramaturge meetings/rewrites (ongoing)
*** May, 2010 Playwright video interviews (2hrs, date TBD)
*** June 3, 2010 Opening night 7:00 p.m.


3) PLAY REQUIREMENTS

     a) Basic criteria:

               i) Must be submitted electronically (please see section 4, below).
               ii) Must be an original one act play
               iii) Running time should not exceed 20 minutes
               iv) No longer than 20 pages
               v) At least two and no more than 8 characters
               vi) Stage actions, sets and scene changes need to be appropriate for a small black box theatre
               vii) There are no restrictions on style, theme or content
               viii) Collaborations will be considered.

       b) Plays must include:

               i) Page numbers
               ii) A list of characters

     c) Plays must not include:

               i) The playwright's name and identifying information (That goes on a separate cover sheet. Please see section 4, below).

4) FORMATTING AND EMAILING

     a) Scripts must be submitted as document attachments to an email. Acceptable formats are:

               i) Word
               ii) Rich Text File
               iii) PDF

Sorry, we cannot accept WordPerfect files.

     b) Complete the cover sheet (copy and paste it from the end of this document), save it as a separate document, and send it in the same email as your script. Important: make sure the cover sheet is fully completed. The Gorilla Theatre cannot accept plays with missing or incomplete cover sheets.

     c) Email both documents (your script and your cover sheet) to the Gorilla Theatre at info@gorillatheatre.com with YDP in the header line.

5) DEADLINE

     a) Scripts and cover sheets must be received by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, February 15, 2010.

6) THE REWARDS

     a) All entrants receive two complimentary tickets to see YDP '10.

     b) If your play is selected you'll enjoy the following rewards:

               i) A royalty of $250.

               ii) A year's membership of the Dramatists' Guild (the professional association of playwrights, composers, lyricists and librettists).

               iii) Your play will be professionally produced by the Gorilla Theatre and offered as the closing play of the season to our subscribers and the public, June 2-13.

               iv) You'll work with a professional Dramaturge to polish the play.

               v) A professional director will be assigned to your play along with professional actors and technical crew.

               vi) You will have your photo submitted to the media with a press release.

               vii) Your school principal and your playwriting (drama or English) teacher will each also receive a complimentary ticket to the show.
