The Gorilla Theatre to leave Drew Park location;
Bridget Bean joins new Board of Directors
Tampa, Florida: Big changes are happening at The Gorilla Theatre, which has been located in the Drew Park area for 18 years. The Gorilla will leave its current location at the end of the year. In addition, Bridget Bean, The Gorilla's Executive Director, will no longer manage the theatre. Bean, who has been with the theatre since 2005, will remain on the newly elected Board of Directors and chair the Artistic Committee.
"We are taking a leap into the unknown. We had hoped to overcome the loss of our founder and major donor, but these things take time," said board president Sandra Locher. "Our vision for the theatre is to retain the best of it and reinvent Gorilla in a new, larger, more central space, while maintaining the excellent, exciting, and eclectic programming that our patrons have come to expect from us."
Tampa Bay theatregoers have a final opportunity to experience Gorilla's cozy and intimate venue in Drew Park by attending the current production, The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe, running now through December 18th. Co-produced by The Gorilla Theatre and director Christopher Rutherford, it stars Jonelle Meyer in a "tour de force" one-woman performance as Trudy a homeless hoarder with psychic abilities that she claims come from her umbrella hat and are controlled by aliens from outer space. It is both humorous and profound.
THE SEASON GOES ON
The Gorilla's exciting 2011-2012 season will continue as planned, with locations for the two remaining productions to be announced.
In March will be The Whipping Man, the highly-anticipated Regional Premiere by USF graduate and playwright Matthew Lopez. It is set in Richmond, Virginia near the end of the Civil War and on the eve of Passover. Three men come together, bound by their history and their faith, and uncover a tangled web of secrets. Dramatic and deep, it is a story not to be forgotten soon.
The 11th annual Young Dramatists' Project (YDP) will take place in June. Prize-winning plays by high school playwrights throughout the Tampa Bay area will receive a full professional production.
Locations for those productions will be announced at a later date. Keep watching www.gorillatheatre.com for information as our plans evolve.
