The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe by Jane Wagner
Opens December 1 at the Gorilla Theatre

ABOUT THE PLAY

The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe transcends time and space, warping through an eclectic assortment of wildly different characters including Trudy — a homeless hoarder with psychic abilities that she claims come from her umbrella hat and are controlled by aliens from outer space who are searching for signs of intelligent life in the universe.

The Search For Signs... was made famous on stage and screen by Lily Tomlin in the mid-1980's and was later remounted by her and Jane Wagner on Broadway in 2000, that year winning the Tony for Best Revival of a Play.

"Genuinely subversive comedy." — The New York Times
"Makes you laugh until you hurt." — WABC TV
"A human comedy that strikes home so sharply it brings gasps of recognition as well as outbursts of laughter." — Newsweek

THE PEOPLE

Jonelle Meyer (Trudy, et al) starred in last year's production of Shipwrecked! (An Entertainment) at The Gorilla Theatre for which she won the Jeff Norton Award for Best Supporting Actress. Over the last seven years Ms. Meyer has worked in numerous productions at several local theaters including Stageworks, Hat Trick Theatre, The Early Bird Dinner Theatre, The Blue Scarf Collective and The Gorilla Theatre.

Christopher Rutherford (Director)’s previous projects include the critically acclaimed 2009 production of Jails,Hospitals and Hip-Hop by Danny Hoch, starring Curtis Belz and 2010's This Is Our Youth at The Silver Meteor Gallery and Danny and the Deep Blue Sea by John Patrick Shanley at The Studio@620 in St.Petersburg.

THE PRODUCTION

Our production design departs from the original bare stage setting and instead visually reflects the play's sci-fi tone and exploration of materialism, ownership, and status by delving into the world and mind of Trudy, the play's narrator.

This production is co-produced by Mr. Rutherford and The Gorilla Theatre and is sponsored in part by a Think Small to Think Big arts micro-grant made possible through Hampton Arts Management and The Gobioff Foundation.
