The Gorilla Theatre opens its 09-10 season with The Woman in Black
THE WOMAN IN BLACK
Adapted by Stephen Mallatratt
>From the novel by Susan Hill
October 15 –November 8, 2009 Special late night show on Halloween!
ABOUT THE PLAY
Based closely on the novel of the same name, The Woman in Black follows the tradition of the classic ghost story popularized by Charles Dickens and M.R James, Henry James and Edith Wharton, relying on atmosphere, a vivid sense of place, hints, glimpses and suggestions, to chill the blood and send shivers down the spine.
Billed as "the most terrifying live theatre experience in the world", The Woman in Black continues to be one of London's longest-running plays, having been seen by over 7 million people in the last 21 years.
"A truly nerve shredding experience." — Daily Mail.
"Provides a pleasurable ripple of fear down one's spine and an uncomfortable lurch in the pit of one's stomach." — Time Out.
"A brilliantly effective spine chiller.... The narrative is gripping." — Guardian.
The Gorilla Theatre will offer a late night show on Halloween. Due to our intimate size and limited seating capacity, reservations are highly recommended. Please note there will be no late admission, under any circumstances.
THE STORY
Eel Marsh House stands tall, gaunt and isolated, surveying the endless flat salt marshes beyond the Nine Lives Causeway, somewhere on England's bleak East Coast. Here Mrs. Alice Drablow lived — and died — alone.
Young Arthur Kipps, a junior solicitor, is ordered by his firm's senior partner to travel up from London to attend her funeral and then sort out all her papers. His task is a lonely one, and at first Kipps is quite unaware of the tragic secrets which lie behind the house's shuttered windows.
He only has a terrible sense of unease...
THE WRITER
Susan Hill was born in the north of England in 1942. In high school, Hill became interested in theatre and literature. She wrote her first novel, The Enclosure which was published in her first year at university. The novel was criticized by The Daily Mail for its sexual content, with the suggestion that writing in this style was unsuitable for a "schoolgirl".
Hill's next novel Gentleman and Ladies was published in 1968. This was followed in quick succession by A Change for the Better, I'm the King of the Castle, The Albatross and other stories, Strange Meeting, The Bird of Night, A Bit of Singing and Dancing and In the Springtime of the Year, all written and published between 1968 and 1974.
Hill's novels are written in a descriptive gothic style, especially her ghost story The Woman in Black which was written in 1982. She has expressed an interest in the traditional English ghost story which relies on suspense and atmosphere to create its impact, similar to the classic ghost stories by Montague Rhodes James and Daphne du Maurier. The Woman in Black was turned into a play in 1987 and continues to run in the West End of London, joining the group of plays that have run for over twenty years. It was also filmed for a TV movie in 1989. She wrote another ghost story with similar ingredients, The Mist in the Mirror in 1992, and a sequel to du Maurier's Rebecca entitled Mrs De Winter in 1993.
Hill is married to Shakespeare scholar Stanley Wells and is currently writing novels in the crime genre. Further information may be found at www.susan-hill.com.
