THE GORILLA THEATRE ANNOUNCES ITS 2010-2011 SEASON

The Gorilla's 10-11 season in brief:
  • A fast-moving adventure in the vein of The 39 Steps (Shipwrecked! An Entertainment);
  • A darkly hilarious Christmas farce (Christmas Stopping);
  • A great American drama set in medieval France (The Lion in Winter);
  • A delightful romance set in old Florida (Sweet Storm);
  • A scandalous encounter with a superstar (An Inappropriate Evening with Klaus Kinsky);
  • And the fresh, surprising Young Dramatists' Project – now in its 11th Season!
Once again, the Gorilla is holding its prices at the same level as previous seasons, making it an exceptional value in entertainment.

OUR 2010-2011 SEASON:

September 23-October 17, 2010
SHIPWRECKED! AN ENTERTAINMENT – THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF LOUIS DE ROUGEMONT (AS TOLD BY HIMSELF)
By Donald Margulies

"Margulies gives a sympathetic nod to the audacious autobiographer's creative overreach in SHIPWRECKED " —LA Times. Louis De Rougemont thrilled Victorian London with tales of his adventures and his life as king of a cannibal tribe in Northern Australia. In "Shipwrecked" - by award-winning playwright Donald Margulies - De Rougemont tells his story in a deft and highly theatrical narrative folded into a vaudevillian romp with radio theater overtones. Not to be missed!

"The breathless story of a Victorian gentleman / seafaring wanderer springs to life like a theatrical pop-up book. The audience is left to judge whether he is an inspirational figure touched by imaginative genius or a mere con man. We can also consider the possibility that the hero of this true story based on an untrue story is a little of each." —NY Times.

CHRISTMAS STOPPING
By James Rayfield

In a style reminiscent of the best of David Ives or Christopher Durang, James Rayfield's dark Christmas farce casts a humorous light on the commercialization of the Holidays. Served up with a side item of another Rayfield comedy, The Chatterbox Cafι plus musical entertainment, this is a great alternative to more common Christmas fare.

James Rayfield (playwright) is Artistic Director of the Gorilla Theatre's Young Dramatists' Project. He has been a theatre teacher for almost thirty years. He has published several plays including The Five Pound Sack, They Call Me Danny Brillo and Help Wanted. He has an MFA from the University of Texas at Austin and studied acting with Viola Spolin in Los Angeles.

Special talkback sessions with the playwright will be scheduled during the run of the show.

January 13 - February 6, 2011
THE LION IN WINTER
By James Goldman

A high stakes game of one-upmanship, infighting, and the politics of succession.

For sheer bloody-minded, backstabbing, double-crossing behavior, few families can beat the Plantagenets. King Henry II, having brought together England, Scotland, Wales, and a hefty chunk of France under his rule, has to leave it to someone capable of keeping it all intact. Henry is a master manipulator, powerful and charismatic, who favors his youngest son John for the throne. His sternest opposition comes from his quick-witted wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, who he keeps imprisoned for, among other things, attempting to lead a rebellion against him. Eleanor favors Richard, and will do whatever it takes to put him on the throne in John's place - or in Henry's, if necessary.

"A work of intelligence, astringent wit, and much theatrical skill."-The New York Times

February 24 – March 20, 2011
SWEET STORM
By Scott Hudson

.. I knew I had done carved out what the ol' Hebrew prophet Samuel had once't carved in a stone. Ebenezer - "The Lord has helped me thus far." I knew Ruthie, right then and there you was mine. You were my Only. My only love, only kiss. - Bo

Scott Hudson's delightful Florida love story (which, early in its development, received a staged reading as part of the Gorilla Reading Series in 2008) returns to the Gorilla in a full production following its success in New York and its publication by Dramatists' Play Service.

A special talkback session on the life cycle of new play development will be scheduled during the run of the show.

"A gentle wisp of a love story in Florida in 1960, [Sweet Storm] blends a fantastical setting with a longing for spiritual and carnal rapture, and by not straining to do too much, accomplishes more than it deserves to … stays with you like the freshness following a summer cloudburst." – The New York Times

April 14 – May 1
AN INAPPROPRIATE EVENING WITH KLAUS KINSKY
By Aubrey Hampton

Mesmerizing! Shocking! Outspoken! There's no holds barred when Klaus Kinski takes the stage and begins to talk.

Gorilla Theatre founder Aubrey Hampton's new play brings actor, director and writer Klaus Kinsky to the stage for an unforgettably Inappropriate evening.

Shockingly brutal, surprisingly tender, Kinski is as haunting and seductive as the parts he played. There is nothing politically correct about Kinski, and he takes on the audience as he loved to do in coffee houses and beer joints.

Contains adult language of a sexual nature, obscene discussions, and inappropriate speeches which may be offensive to some people.

June 2 – 12, 2010
YOUNG DRAMATISTS' PROJECT (YDP) '11

Five New Works by Prize-Winning Teen Playwrights

Always exciting and provocative, YDP is now in its eleventh year! Come see five new works by teen playwrights come to life on the Gorilla Theatre stage!

"Is there imaginative, innovative work coming from these teens? Might they eventually infuse the region with new talent? Yes and yes." - Creative Loafing.
