JANE EYRE OPENS OCTOBER 25 AT THE GORILLA THEATRE

The Gorilla Theatre proudly presents Jane Eyre by Polly Teale.

You'll fall in love with this wonderful Jane Eyre adaptation that originated with Shared Experience in London and enjoyed critical acclaim in New York.

While this adaptation is true to Charlotte Bronte's story, it's also a highly psychological, deconstructed theatrical experience in which Jane's suppressed feelings are embodied in the ultimate madwoman-in-the-attic, Bertha Rochester.

Jane Eyre is a true ensemble performance and gothic enough for Halloween. Runs October 25-November 11 at the Gorilla Theatre.

Extracts from the Director's Notes (Gorilla Theatre program):

Sometimes it pays to postpone reading a masterpiece until one's later years. I read the novel of Jane Eyre for the very first time this summer of 2007 and I was shocked. Not that I hadn't believed the literary commentators and friends who read that it was a vital, important book. But upon reading Polly Teale's masterful adaptation, I read the novel and fell into admiration.

The Shared Experience Company which originally produced this adaptation and with which Polly Teale is associated is a distinguished British stage company founded as a "page to stage" group. The company has had both critical and financial success with over twenty major productions including The Mill on the Floss, Anna Karenina, and most recently War and Peace.

1847 was a banner year for English publishing. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte was published 160 years ago this month in 1847. So were her sisters' novels, Wuthering Heights and Agnes Grey, and William Makepeace Thackeray's serialized novel Vanity Fair—a Novel without a Hero appeared over the course of that year as well. There must have been something in the air of the Yorkshire countryside that for the sake of our souls we too must breathe in.
